The sequence of words is the subject of a series of posters and postcards which have been distributed in the city of Bolzano. PRIVATE ≠ PUBLIC ≠ COMMON provokes an alternative interpretation of the thoughts developed during the course of the project and the thoughts behind the project itself.
Well, it is but it could also be a theke, a counter. which leads farther to the word encounter in the english vocabulary. Simply think it as a place where you can meet people throught their writings. And as far as we are working and researching on commons in this project it became a COMMONtheke. So please feel free to walk by Lungomare and share the publications with us and after return them to its physical base at Lungomare project space. Or just remember the online index of the Commontheke as a constantly updated specific collection.

Measuring public and common
Workshop run by Andrea Mubi Brighenti and Pierangelo Schiera (Trento)
What does measuring public and common mean? In this workshop we will invite the participants to reflect on the demands of “publicity” and “communality” which come up in our daily lives and in our collective claims. We would like to invite those taking part to try and visualize the moments and ways in which we feel the experience of being in public, of being in common.

Is the city a common good?
Conference by Pierangelo Schiera (Trento)
Is the city a right?
Conference by Maria Chiara Tosi (Venice)
The city with its fabric of collective spaces and its changing organization is the terrain on which new and old rights of citizenship can form. Amongst these there is the right to a comfortable, salubrious and safe space which exerts a significant influence on the quality of our daily life, on the growth of inequality and on the possibility of people from different backgrounds living together.
> Introduction and chair: Andrea Mubi Brighenti / a discussion will follow.

Bene comune, commons, community?
A walk through the Gries district in the company of: Katherina Longariva, blufink (Bolzano)
contribution by: Franceso Minora, professionaldreamers (Trento)
> meeting point: Piazza Mazzini (in front of the RAI)
What experiences does our city offer us and how do we experience them? What are public goods, common goods and how do they influence our way of living together? What imprint does private property make on our existence? The walk we are proposing aims to urge participants to have a discussion by inviting them to observe a district from a new point of view. Is it possible to think about human beings living together beyond the limitations of private property? How could this living together be achieved? What kind of places favour it? With our action we are inviting you to explore and experiment together different forms of living together.
An installation of comics has been developed to present the Jederland project in Turin. The comic was considered a suitable means for visualizing in the space the important points connected to the Jederland project and for representing their mutual dependence. The images of various comics relevant to the project have been scanned, reprocessed and prepared with new texts. In the making of this collage particular attention has been paid to maintaining the specific aesthetic characteristics of each comic and the personality of its characters. Scrooge McDuck does not therefore renounce the ownership of a piece of his land as an act of solidarity, but because he wants to become a member of an art club.

"Symbolic actions for our present" meets Ugo Mattei for a reflection on the possibility of setting up a common good
Artissima Lido
In the mediaeval district of the ‘Roman Quadrilateral’, Artissima is organizing an evening programme of events outside the fair and outside of its opening hours. A number of artists and collectives from all over Italy will temporarily take over a series of city spaces, where they will work on their various experimental activities, at the same time and in the same place. Curated by Christian Frosi, Renato Leotta, and Diego Perrons.

The project Jederland engages with the issues of property and possession and how the resulting power structures shape the way we live together. Jederland’s objective is to free a piece of land from its status of possession in order to withdraw it from the dynamics of power it is usually subjected to. We want to create a vacuum in the urban fabric in which rigid conventions and systems are suspended, a space of imagination where new modes of living together can be developed. The land, physically located in the urban space of Bolzano, should on the one hand prompt a questioning of the limits of current property laws, and on the other hand represents a lever for a broad discussion on property, possession, community and common goods. Considering the ever-present territorial conflicts, our willingness to rethink these concepts is taking on a crucial role.
"Jederland" is a project for the public space of Bozen-Bolzano, and is a partresult of the research project "Symbolic actions for our present time", a Lungomare project-space initiative. "Jederland" is a collective work of Brave New Alps, Helmut Heiss, Eva Mair, Maja Malina, Katherina Putzer and the project curators Angelika Burtscher and Daniele Lupo.
What name to give to our symbolic action? It can’t contain the word “monument” because this concept would give rise to false expectations. The name should directly reflect the action.
Chosen name: Jederland
Our project concludes with a symbolic action which doesn’t pretend to define itself as a monument. The project could obtain a monumental character at a later date, by means of collective consensus.
The project is going to be presented on Friday, the 8th of July at the Lungomare location – Rafensteinweg 12, 39100 Bozen-Bolzano.
Jacopo Candotti distances himself from the idea and realization of the project "Jederland", and is going to present on July 8th his artistic contribution to the research "Symbolic actions for our present time".
On the edge of the industrial estate, between the Mebo freeway, the ring road and the railway junction one can spot a hill covered by a meadow. The hill is owned by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano.
The land is surrounded by roads and therefore practically inaccessible. Despite its position on the outskirts the hill maintains considerable visibility and presence thanks to its three-dimensional aspect and has a significant communicative potential. The morphology of the land is to be attributed to a bunker which was hidden under a mound of earth, the bunker dates back to the Second World War.
map
The project group is working on the drafting of a new variant of Jederland which takes into account the land singled out on the edge of the industrial estate south of Bolzano and the possible interventions which can be performed to create a piece of land for the participation of the citizens in the long process necessary for turning it into a common good. The land is shaped like a hill due to a bunker underneath the grass covering it.
The 75 qm large, pointed piece of land lays in the pivotal point between the centre, the Bozner Boden and Rentsch. The piece of land has no special qualitity referred to its usability, nevertheless it could become, thanks to its good visibility and central location, a signaling effect. As visible action on the spot the borderline of the bought piece of land will be marked, the spot will be cleaned, thought left in its original state.
The price is scheduled extremely high, even though the piece of land is quite worthless in terms of economies, since it is a not usable oddment. After some negotiations with the owner we needed to drop the piece of land I.
Notes/discussion/extract
E: You can always find an action, an event behind a monument. A monument is not for or against something... B: The potential of those questions is much larger. F: We are returning to the preconceptions we once had of a monument!!! We are very linked to the understanding of the monument for or against something... B: It is first a symbolic action and afterwords it can be defined a monument. F: A monument to the failure is a very classical idea of monument! D: What will be left is an association which owns a piece of land and which will be engaged to operate until that ground is everybody's. The symbolic action will just be interrupted temporarily due to the predicted failure; the intent and the matter remains! The piece of land is waiting for a new destination, and is able to keep the discussion alive and concrete. A: To me it's violence to write history with monuments!... B: It will be for sure not us to inflict to people that our action is a monument. H: It becomes a monument naturally, a monument auto-defines itself. J: We are utopian and ideological: the demolition of private property, the possibility of commons, are we going towards a "critic of private property"? H: The notion "monument"is very trendy, certainly our project has the potential to be a monument, there is no need to define it as such a priori. It's a waiting monument! A: It's going to be the collectivity to make it become a monument. But what about "everybody" or "nobody"? The desire to donate to everybody something seems definitely prepotent to me! Who is "everybody"? Maybe a "nobody" would give more space for different thoughts? "Nobody's" property.... J: The action unfortunately has nothing fresh! What is the symbolic action? A piece of land left as it was? What benefit could that have, speaking also about spiritual benefit? It is possible to create interesting discussions everywhere. To me it seems to be a very weak action not leaving any space....those are very fixed and utopian solutions! Is there any need for a piece of land to confirm that it is not possible to create "everybody's! or "nobody's"?! A: No, but still it's the matter to do a symbolic action to initiate a more deep and theoretic discourse...
Idea version III
An association founded by us purchases a piece of land in Bolzano. The statute of the association commits itself to converting the purchased land into a common good. The first attempt consists in the request to register the land in the cadastre as “everybody’s land”. should this not be successful then subsequent legal proceedings will be set in motion to manage to achieve the purpose of the association.

PROPOSAL OF HELMUT HEISS FOR AN INTERVENTION AT A CORNERPIECE OF LAND IN LAURINSTREET
Documentation of the land search
From October 2010 we were looking for pieces of land in the center of Bolzano which are apparently "not used", "empty" and private property and interesting. Further we were investigating the lot and the owner. It was a good looking exercise which brought us also to modificate our places of reference on the map of Bolzano.
